Become A Student Of Your Craft. Learn Music Theory

Before I started playing music I thought writing and composing music was all about talent and having a great ear. I didn’t know anything about music at the time. Sure, being talented and having a great ear is definitely helpful but did you know that Beethoven was deaf for the last 20 years of his life when he composed some of his most famous work?

Studying music theory will teach you that music is not as complicated as it may seem if you don’t know anything about its structure. Basically, music is about relationships between notes. Just like in life, some relationships work and some don’t. By learning music theory you will know what works and what doesn’t. Imagine if you knew what relationships were going to work out in life, wouldn’t that make life a whole lot easier? Knowing music theory will make your life as a musician much easier.

In John Mayer’s 2011 clinic at Berklee he spoke about the myth that learning too much theory and technique will replace one’s style, saying it’s nothing more than a “Lazy excuse”. He also discredited the myth by saying that he had been trying to extend his vocal range for 10 years but he still haven’t been able to get rid of his orignial style although he has tried. (Elisa, 2011)

Don’t cut yourself short by believing something that isn’t true because it’s easier. To be a great musician you need to be a student of music.

Below is a link to the article from John Mayer’s 2011 clinic at Berklee that I referred to.  It is a great read for any aspiring musician in today’s industry. The article is about focusing on the quality of your music and not worrying so much about social media promotions.

Pick up a music theory book from the library, or take a music theory class and become a student of your craft!

Wow, Deborah! How cool. I wonder if there are other As laeotcd in the soundboard and body? I LOVED using the tuning key as the sharping device, since I almost always have that with me. And the chopsticks made me think of Evelyn Glennie for some reason. Could you play the strings with mallets? With Reiki blessings and aloha from Hawai'i Island
