Sound Check, Tools of the Trade

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday season!

In this day and age of having an app to do almost everything, I don’t foresee code being written to replace the human ear and mental reasoning when it comes to mixing sound, in our lifetime at least.

So for now humans, it is up to us to man the helm and turn the controls the right way to achieve what needs to be done!

There are apps available to help us in our craft, such as spectrum analyzers to identify frequencies and sound pressure levels, remote control apps for mixers such as Yamaha’s and PreSonus’s largely popular versions.  Even I, the old guy, find these remote apps very handy. It is a blessing to be able to “walk” the room while mixing, to hear from different vantage points while still having control to adjust without hustling back to the mothership mix position to adjust this and that every few seconds!

The analyzers and SPL meters on phone apps are very basic at this time, not being calibrated, and utilizing the built in phone microphone to operate. Personally, I stay away from them because of this, and rely on my ears first, and SmaartLive with a calibrated reference mic for fine tuning and initial settings of systems.
